The Difference Between Running a Bot and Running It Well

Most traders lose edge in execution, not in ideas. Installing Poly Crypto Bot and starting it on default settings will get you trading — but the configuration choices you make in the first week determine whether you are building a repeatable edge or just generating random outcomes.

This guide covers the five configuration decisions that matter most: position sizing, strategy selection, active hours, active days, and journal discipline.

Step 1 — Set Position Size Before Anything Else

Before enabling any strategy, configure your per-trade position size. A common mistake is starting too large, having one bad sequence in the first few days, and abandoning the setup before the sample size is meaningful.

Starting recommendation: 1–3% of your total available balance per trade.

If you have $200 in your Polymarket wallet, that means $2–6 per trade. This is not because the bot cannot handle larger sizes — it is because you need enough windows to evaluate your configuration before scaling. Aim for at least 50–100 windows of data before adjusting thresholds.

Step 2 — Choose Your Starting Strategy

Poly Crypto Bot ships with 5 strategies. For most new users, start with Reversal Snipe only and leave all other strategies disabled.

Reversal Snipe is the default for a reason:

  • It has the most documented edge across different market conditions
  • Its multi-signal confirmation model keeps win rate high relative to trade frequency
  • It fires in the last 10–40 seconds, giving clean resolution timing

Resist the urge to enable multiple strategies simultaneously at the start. Running one strategy cleanly gives you interpretable journal data. Running three at once makes it impossible to know which configuration is working.

Step 3 — Configure Active Hours

The BTC prediction markets run 24/7, but your edge is not uniform across all hours. Liquidity, order flow, and price volatility on the underlying BTC spot market all vary significantly between time zones.

How to find your best hours:

  1. Run the bot on default hours for 1–2 weeks
  2. Export your journal data
  3. Group close reasons and PnL by hour-of-day (UTC)
  4. Identify which 6–10 hours show consistently positive expected value
  5. Set those as your active hours window

Once configured, the bot will automatically skip windows outside your active hours — no manual intervention needed.

Step 4 — Configure Active Days

Similar to active hours, certain days of the week behave differently. Weekends often see lower Polymarket liquidity and different BTC microstructure than weekday sessions.

A conservative starting point: restrict to Monday–Friday until you have weekend data to evaluate separately. The active days setting applies per strategy, so you can test different day configurations across different strategies once you are running multiple.

Step 5 — Review Journal Close Reasons Daily

The journal is the most important feedback loop in the bot. Every trade records a close reason — the specific logic branch that triggered the exit. Over time, this data tells you exactly where your edge is concentrated and where it is not.

What to look for:

  • Which close reasons consistently show positive PnL
  • Which close reasons are net-negative across 20+ trades
  • Whether your win rate is tracking your expected value per window

If a specific close reason is consistently negative after 50+ trades, tighten its threshold or disable it entirely. Do not adjust based on 5 trades. Variance in a small sample is noise, not signal.

Common Configuration Mistakes

Setting position size too large early. One bad week with large sizing can wipe the margin to experiment. Start small, validate, then scale.

Enabling too many strategies at once. More strategies does not equal more edge. Start with one. Learn it. Then expand.

Ignoring the journal. The bot can only improve if you review the data. Ten minutes of journal review per day will compound into significantly better configuration over a month.

Changing settings after every loss. Strategy thresholds need sample sizes to be meaningful. Adjust based on 50+ window patterns, not individual results.
